"The server will be restarting in 15...10...5...4...2...1..." When I see this message, the above reaction isn't entirely unheard of...
And it's Monday once again. I apologize for that reference, however I am sure there is a very select few of you (although it's not that difficult of a reference) that will find it humorous. Anyways, the whole server restart thing is because today, my dear readers, marks the first day of classes for the new semester. (At least here at the UofA)
What does this mean? Well, simply put, it's time for a bit of a change. It means that it's time to get up, get my boots on, and PWN. Summer's officially over, and Fall Semester is in high gear. Now today I would like to start off by evaluating my success from last week's final list.
1. I read all of this past week's XKCD comics plus today's.
2. I made a crockpot meal. However, its edibility is... questionable...
3. My Fall Semester 2010 To Do List is still in progress, I'm giving myself till the end of the week for this.
4. My short story so far is still in the drawing board stages. I started writing, however, I quickly realized that the characters will need significantly more depth to make the plot line work. So, I scrapped what I had and am making the characters just that, more in depth.
5. Well, school's starting and I'm just about as ready as can be, what with my pencil, notebooks, and other various items such as books and such.
Not too shabby in my opinion. I managed to at least touch base on just about everything. It seems that I nailed down the technique just as I stopped using it. Well I guess that's just how it goes. Maybe I'll make use of it later on. Let's talk a bit more about the outlook of the semester after the break.
It's like a breathe of fresh air really, a new semester. Everything's the same, but different. Everything's constantly changing, and yet you just keep chugging away. That's what it's like as a college student I suppose. I wonder though, what's beyond the horizon for me? This will be my last year as a student, and for some it'll be their first. The horizon, I suppose, doesn't really change though for either group save that on the other side we've just gotta face tomorrow.
"You know what a paradigm shift is? Everyday you're being fed little pieces of insight. You'll go to bed with the same mindset, and one day you wake up with a different perspective... That's a paradigm shift.
"That's God's way of saying, 'I told you so you dumb son of a beets.'" - Yumfries
That right there is perhaps one of my favorite quotes. There's so much meaning that can be taken from it. Honestly though, today is going to be a good day. Do you know why? Because today I'm going to choose to actively engage. Today I am going to choose to actively seek out uncomfortable situations. "Why," you ask. Because that's how we grow. Being here at the university is something altogether incredible. The education that I'm just about done obtaining will surely come in handy, but it's not the things you learn in class that are the most important.
No, it's the small things. The little things.
It's the staying up through the night to finish that paper.
It's deciding to be more active or eat a little healthier.
It's the decision to pretend you're someone else and go and talk to that cute girl/guy around the corner.
It's the perseverance through life's difficulties with friends you've made and friends you're yet to make.
It's the act of stepping forward into the sunlight and saying to yourself, "Today, is my day."
If you've thought to yourself that maybe, just maybe, you'd like to change something about yourself. Be it being more open, healthier, less shy, more studious, more interactive, or whatever else. If it's something that you want to change so that you can grow and continue to become this constantly evolving new "you", then maybe today's the day to start. Why push off till tomorrow what you can do today? Why do you keep hesitating? Move forwards, push onwards.
Now while some of you might go out and become a brand new person, if that's what you need to do then great, I know that for the most part this won't be the case. I'm not saying it should be. I'm saying that you should make today something special and maybe go out of your comfort zone just a little bit just to try it. After all, it is the first day of school.
Have a great day everyone!
